Students, University & Exam Stress

Student Stress

According to the NHS, https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/children-and-young-adults/help-for-teenagers-young-adults-and-students/student-stress-self-help-tips/ university can be a stressful experience, as well as being fun and exciting. You may feel stressed about starting university, exams, coursework deadlines, living with people you do not get on with, or thinking about the future. Stress is a natural feeling, designed to help you cope in challenging situations. In small amounts, it can be good, because it pushes you to work hard and do your best, such as during exams.

However, if you are feeling stressed or feel, you cannot manage stress; it can lead to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. It can also affect your academic performance. Leaving home to start your studies can involve some stressful changes. These might include moving to a new area, meeting new people and managing on a tight budget.

Short periods of stress are normal and can often be resolved by something as simple as completing a task which cuts down your workload, or by talking to others and taking time to relax.

Adaptogens

Used in Chinese and Ayurvedic healing for thousands of years, adaptogens are natural substances like plants and fungi that are able to help the body resist stressors and promote balance. Research has found them to have the ability to act as neuro-protectants, stimulate the central nervous system, and reduce depression and fatigue. There are dozens of unique adaptogens, with some of the most commonly used being Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Maca and even Jiaogulan.

Adaptogens work by interacting with the body’s hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), which is responsible for dealing with stress. Adaptogens help regulate the production of cortisol, which produced during times of “fight or flight” response. By reducing stress hormones, adaptogens allow your body (and brain) to be even more efficient.

Moreover, when exams are looming, adaptogens may offer a person a good night’s sleep; deal with anxiety, clearer cognition and the feeling of homeostasis aka balance. By reducing stress, adaptogens allow your body and brain to be even more efficient. Now who wouldn’t want that when seeking the best possible grades?
